The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the body found in the bottom of an Oglethorpe County well has been preliminarily identified as a Monroe man who disappeared in January.

The GBI said a man noticed a foul odor in a well on Sandy Cross Road Monday morning and notified the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, who called the GBI.

Investigators found a partially decomposed body in the well, which is located at an abandoned home.

The GBI said its investigation revealed the preliminary identification of the body as Charles Steven Parker, 25.

Parker, of Monroe, was reported missing on Jan. 16, one day after he was last seen in Clarke County.

The autopsy will be performed at the Atlanta Crime Lab.

Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI Athens office at 706-552-2309.
